Chapter 19

Alora

I ’m not sure what to expect when the elevator doors open. The view isn’t much from the start, though. There’s a pea green cloth tent set up so they file people through it to the atrium. It’s how they are going to check people in and keep people out.

Music, a soft melody, plays over a PA system but I can’t see much with the tent blocking everything around me. It doesn’t sound like live music—it must be some sort of recording from the way the volume is precisely controlled.

We approach the end of the tent where two Loyals are situated holding clipboards with papers containing two columns of names all the way down. Damien stands at the front of our group as we approach with me directly behind him, Micah on my left, and Ryder to my right.

My nerves dance along my chest the closer we get to the front of the line. I’m glad I have two people who I know care deeply about me here to support me. I never dreamed I would have to kill someone but here I am plotting to kill a man for a second time. I hate they have to see me do it but if they must be here, I’ll take the support.

“Damien Reynolds, party of 4,” our escort says to the Loyal on the right.

The young woman checks her list finding the name on the second page, first column. She waves us by and my anxiety skyrockets while my head aches. I hoped my nerves would calm down once we passed the check-in but they only grow the closer I get to my objective. It causes the little bell of recognition to ring in the back of my head and the incessant scratching at the wall to become more insistent.

Once we pass the tent, the room opens to reveal beautiful dangling white lights all over the atrium. Like little fireflies dancing about the room. Huge mounds of white cotton have been hung above the lights to give them a cloud-like appearance, which emphasizes the lighting perfectly. They twinkle on and off, creating a lightning type effect. It’s absolutely dazzling.

Pulling my gaze away from the lights, I look at the crowd. Loyals are in their usual uniforms with the weird gray stripe carrying trays of drinks to hand out to people. Still no actual food to be found but I don’t see any pills either. A bar has been set up against the wall to the left and I wonder whether they would carry any blue apple wine.

I’m tempted to go see but decide the mission is more important. I don’t want to confuse Micah or Ryder by veering off our plan for an indulgence. This could be our one shot to get at Bainbridge, and I’m not going to mess it up because I want to try the wine again.

I resign myself to the hope I will get to try some once I’m out of here and back in Landow for good.
